Now to make The Game ultra-interesting, there are at least seven billion other games going on at the same time.

Each of these games has a main character. We’ll call these other games ‘Their Game’. The other characters are the stars of Their Game. The whole appearance of Their Game is created by their settings. Nothing to do with anyone else.

These other games might intersect with The Only Game That Matters, which is of course the Game of Self. How it looks to us. We’ll call this ‘My Game’ in this section to make it clear.

These other characters appear in My Game.

But how they appear in My Game is entirely a function of the settings of the main character in My Game - which of course is ‘me’.

How other characters appear in My Game has nothing to do with how they appear in Their Game.

How my character appears in Their Game has nothing to do with how it appears in My Game and everything to do with the lens of Their Character.

And none of this of course has anything to do with what is actually real.

The only function of these other characters, like everything else that appears, is to increase or decrease the ‘self’ setting of the main character, ‘me’.

When the ‘self setting’ is on high - these other characters will look completely separate from the main character. They will look absolutely vital to the fulfilment of the main character’s goals or they will seem to be in direct opposition to the success of the main character. It will look like these other characters must be controlled for the character to win The Game.

As the ‘self setting decreases’ these characters become more obviously what they are, illusory reflections of an idea of self. Separation between the main character and other characters starts to look ridiculous.

The Game thins to such an extent that all apparent interaction becomes obviously only what it has always been, love talking to itself.

Imagine that you are the creative force of the entire universe.

Imagine you are infinite intelligence, infinite possibility, infinite consciousness. You are infinite and absolute. You are life itself

The infinite and absolute cannot experience the infinite and absolute. You are everything already, no limits, no boundaries, no one and the other, no thing.

You want to experience yourself though.

As the infinite and absolute the most effective way to experience yourself is through the most opposite of what you are - limited, constrained, boundaried and separate.

So you create a game - a world of things, of people, of situations. At the centre of this game is the main Character. This Character is you, infinite creation, disguised as an isolated individual. For the Game to work, the Character must experience life absolutely convinced that it is not the infinite. Everything it experiences must support this illusion.

The Character must live out the reality that it is autonomous, making its own individual decisions. It must live an experience of being separate from infinite life, infinite intelligence, infinite consciousness. It must believe it is separate from the people and things around. It must experience what would come most naturally and easily as problematic, isolating and confronting.

The greater the experience of being what it is not, the more successful the illusion. What the Character is must be completely hidden in this game. As long as the illusion is convincing, it is doing its job. As long as it contains all the drama of survival, it will continue to run as an apparent reality.

Existence is a roller coaster of highs and lows of affirmation that feel like survival. This can be all absorbing.

The real Game though is that every single experience, every single word spoken, heard or read, every action, every thought is revealing the ultimate Game of all eternity: the on-going revelation of what we really are.

The clues are everywhere and in everything.

Everything, all the time, is either an experience of separation, a momentary, unconscious experience of oneness or the ultimate game changer - the realisation of oneness that then infiltrates every moment and which reveals the experiencer to be, life itself creating in form via a miracle body-mind, the intentional origin of it all.

Which is it to be?

What is your character?

In other words, what is the representative of the infinite and absolute that you are?

What definable form is apparently shrinking and limiting the indefinable being-ness of you?

The red plastic person-shape counter you used to choose for Ludo?

The Rolls Royce car when you play Monopoly at Christmas?

Mrs Peacock in Clue/Cluedo?

Michael, Trevor and Franklin of Grand Theft Auto?

In this game of life, how is your character separated out from the others?

Colour?

Shape?

Job?

Football team?

Personality?

Preferences?

Role?

Possessions?

Knowledge?

Education?

Habits?

Hobbies?

Problems?

Needs?

Lack?

Fear?

Failure?

Whatever differentiates the ‘you’ player has to be very distinctive. The more distinctive the better.

So the character can say, ‘This is me. I know who I am. I am like this.’

It doesn’t matter if that distinction is:

‘I am the best thing since sliced bread. I should rule the world’

or

‘I am a walking disaster. The world would be better off without me.’

Both serve the function of separating out the character from everything else.

That’s a very important part of The Game. If the main character just got lost amongst all the other characters there would be No Game.

The character does not decide its features, its distinctions.

They just are.

But, because the game always takes place from the perspective of the main character, these features, these needs, these problems, this identity, and above all this ‘self setting’ are what creates The Game.

The character is vital.

From the character The Game emerges.

There is a truth that is so outrageous, so impossible to contemplate, so at odds with our everyday experience that it should be expected to be immediately dismissed.

Yet it seems everyone who contemplates it, despite perhaps never even having considered it, almost immediately smiles and says, ‘Wow. I can see that. Yes. It makes sense. It’s true. I am.’

This truth is incessantly contradicted and yet remains as the background constant to everything. Talking about, drawing it up to conscious awareness, seeing the impossibility of denying it is literally a Game Changer.

The truth is this:

We are the Creator of everything.

We are it. The creative origin. The source of how we appear to ourselves, of how all others appear, of all events, all circumstances, of how the entire universe appears.

It doesn’t look like it though. For a lot of the time it looks like we are what we experience ourselves to be - a separate limited entity, exactly as we think we are, cut off from infinite possibility, from other people. We experience the highs and lows of how life treats us as though we are a plastic bottle being tossed around by ocean waves.

In these moments there is no thought of being anything other than not the Creator - the victim.

And this is the design. This is what we create for ourselves - the experience of being everything the Infinite Creator is not - limited, stuck, hopeless, helpless, insecure, vulnerable.

We, the Creator, have done this on purpose. Of course we have. We are Life Intelligence. We are Consciousness. We are Infinite Possibility. It is inconceivable that we are not creating by design. It is impossible that there is anything random or inconsistent in our creation.

Infinity cannot experience itself. Absolute is no-thing. There is no place in the Infinite Absolute where something begins or ends.

And so you, as the Infinite Creator, create the appearance of a world of form and a limited, constricted, contracted character ‘I’ from which the truth is hidden. In the same way that when we watch a film that is so gripping, tense and dramatic, for those 120 minutes we ARE the main character, living their life, facing their dangers.

But the character is never what we are.

We are Life itself creating all form.

We are Consciousness itself in which all form appears.

The design is perfect.

[Excerpt from GAME]

Think of any character in any video game.

Imagine that character believing there is something it can do to prevent the game being turned off.

Imagine it living in fear of that happening.

This is insecurity. We, the character, are trying to make ourselves secure.

‘This life is terrifying. I need a guarantee that I will be OK, that things will work out for me. I can’t bear any uncertainty. I worry about losing my health, my possessions, the people and things I rely on. I am frightened of making a bad decision or getting life wrong. How can I know what to do?

Such a roller-coaster of a game. The search for security by a character that can be switched off at any moment. The nature of the character is insecurity, because it is an illusion. Identified with the character we are fighting to make this character real, stable, secure. It never can be.

There is nothing to secure. Nothing to fix down. No health to hold onto.

And in the deep knowing of that, houses can still be locked up for the night, doctors appointments can still be made, a body will move away from danger.

[Excerpt from SHIFT]

A few years ago, I had completed an advanced yoga teacher training on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. After the closing ceremony I wandered onto the beach. I was bare-foot, wearing a white dress, my mala beads around my neck. I was healthy, tanned and toned from hundreds of hours of yoga. The sand was pale yellow and the sea and sky a brilliant blue. A breeze gently lifted my hair from my neck. I walked along with my feet in the water. I was completely alone on the beach, and it was utterly tranquil. I was deeply at peace, feeling at absolute one-ness with life, the elements, the teachings. I understood in the core of my being the perfection of it all.

Then, out of nowhere, there was a roaring sound. Startled from my non-dualistic contemplations, I looked up to see a jet-ski appear in the empty sea ridden by a man and a woman. I watched as the jet-ski came straight towards me almost as if it was going to plough into me. Then at the last minute it took a steep curve, creating a wave of water that arched high into the sky before descending and drenching me with perfect precision from head to foot. The man and the woman burst into laughter and waved as the jet ski disappeared into the distance, leaving just me, the sea and beach once again.

I stood there for quite a while, a bedraggled, soaking, salty mess.

Then I wiped the sand and seawater off my face with the hem of my dress as best I could and made my way back to the ashram.

We think we’ve got it. We think we are complete, that we are enlightened, that we know everything, that we are somehow above all human suffering. And the moment that thought appears, along comes something like those cheery, wavy drenchers to say,

‘Oh no you haven’t. Not even slightly.’

The jet ski might come in the form of a parking ticket, an illness, an assault, a row with a friend or spouse, redundancy, a divorce, an unruly child, unexpected bills, criticism, indifference, being ignored or excluded…

The resistance and resentment experienced will come from whatever in that moment the identity is most attached to.

This is the gift of our lives. This is the perfection of the design. It shows over and over again that the identity of separation can never be secured.

The Shift cannot ever be driven by ego.

The Shift cannot even take place by trying to get rid of the ego.

Because the Shift is the ending of the attempt to secure the idea of a separate me through seeking, resistance or control. And that includes any attempt to get rid of an ego that is supposedly in the way of the desired experience of peace, happiness or freedom.

The Shift is not an activity of separation.

It is separation falling away.

The Shift is not an activity of control.

It is all belief in an independent controlling entity dissolving.

The Shift is not an activity of resistance.

It is an opening to experience happening.

The Shift is not a denial of reality.

It is attention coming from such openness and curiosity that anything not true cannot remain.

The Shift is not even a change.

It is the disappearance of what wasn’t even there in the first place.

The Shift is a non-event. Simply the ending of an illusion. Simply truth realised.

The Shift.

[Excerpt from HOME]

One evening, I was on my own watching ‘Fleabag’, the series created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Fleabag is the main character (we never learn her real name).

Her sister in the programme is called Claire. Married to someone who treats her appallingly, Claire is in love with a Scandinavian man she has met through her work. He is called Klare.

Fleabag and her sister bump into this man in the park. (It’s the ‘I look like a pencil!’ haircut scene for those in the know.)

The scene ends with Fleabag firstly turning to her sister and saying “Bye Claire”.

Then she turns to the man and says, “Bye Klare…

…And then she turns to the camera (ie to ME the viewer!!!) and says “Bye Clare”.

Yikes! I almost jumped out of my skin. (My name is Clare remember. It might not have had the same effect if my name was anything else). For a split second I felt like I’d crossed a line between two dimensions, suspended between two planets, in two worlds simultaneously.

Because, as absolutely involving, moving and engaging as a piece of film is, the characters on screen exist in a different (unreal) plane to the viewer, the (real) conscious space in which they appear.

The format of the Fleabag programmed played on this. The main character would continually look to or speak to the camera, to us the viewer. At one level it seemed to cross the line between the two worlds but at a deeply known level it was known it never could.

The characters in the film and the viewer of the film do not exist in the same reality.

While the viewer is engaged in the film, however, it looks absolutely real. In those moments, the viewer is oblivious to the fact that it is just a creation.

The viewer is fully identified in to the movie, moved by the drama, engaged in the twists and turns of the relationships.

The viewer’s only actual reality, as witness, as the space in which all elements of the movie arise, is forgotten about.

And then something breaks the spell of identification with the movie.

It might get boring. It might be a bit of bad acting or clunky script. It might be the Starbucks cup in the Game of Thrones. It might be someone coming into the living room and asking if we want a cup of tea. It might be the closing music beginning and the end credits appearing.

(It probably won’t be one of the characters apparently turning to you and addressing you by name, I’m afraid. That is reserved only for Clares apparently.)

Without the viewer in the first place though, the programme could not have been experienced. It could not exist in the way it appears to.

Consciousness is the first ‘pointing’ of this book. Consciousness is the viewer. It is the illuminated present in which everything happens and of which everything is made. Without Consciousness there would be nothing, no-thing, nothing visible, nothing sensed, nothing felt, nothing seen or heard.

Consciousness is the prerequisite to anything appearing, in the way that a viewer is the prerequisite to the film being seen, to the film coming into existence.

The film is so vivid, so real, so gripping, so enthralling that the fact of the viewer is completely disregarded. The act of viewing is irrelevant (even though, in reality, it is the only truth). The film is grabbing all attention.

But what is the film? What is it made of? It is fascinating to consider that, while that film, that arc of tragedy and drama and adventure and tension and loss, appears so compellingly, objectively real, it is actually made of the viewer.

In a conversation about reality, what becomes clear is that the thing that looks so real, the film, does not exist as anything tangible or real. It is the viewing, that is making it all possible.

When the film, that drama, that tension starts to become less compelling, it starts to be recognised for what it is, a creation of Consciousness.

It becomes recognised that that is what we are. And that is mind-blowing. The mind begins to settle back into the truth that all these comings and goings are happening within awareness. Without Consciousness or awareness, nothing.

We can explore the idea of Consciousness a bit more deeply with the dream analogy. When we are asleep, we might dream of a ‘me’ character going through different experiences and endeavours. That entire set up is happening within the existence of the dreamer. The character in the dream, as real as it looks, as much like us as it appears, is just a creation of mind in that moment, made possible because there is a dreamer.

The dream is made possible by the dreamer and the dream is made of the dreamer: it is all the same thing. There is no possibility of separating dream and dreamer. There is not even any possibility of separating anything within the dream, as much as it appears that it is a real world, that there are real people and real events, it is still a creation of the dream.

Within the dream, it looks like survival can only be achieved through controlling the happenings within the dream and that safety is only possible by securing the character. But actually, because the whole thing is taking place within the dreamer’s sleeping mind, the only possible solution for that character is for the dreamer to wake up. In other words, the only way the character’s challenges can end is for the dream to end and the character to disappear. On waking, there is no character, no threat.

What we start to see from this, is that the Consciousness that we are enables an experience of a separate idea of what we are. But the truth is that we are only that space in which that lived experience of separation arises.

Through this section of HOME we are essentially considering this shift of lived experience:

From a human conscious mind identified in to the drama, believing its beliefs…

…To a human conscious mind that is no longer identified to the drama and is settling back into its truth as the viewer, the dreamer, the Consciousness space in which everything appears.

When we suffer, the mind is trying to find its way within the dream back to reality, to Wholeness but it can never achieve that. The dream depends on the belief that it is real, and that it is separate from the dreamer, separate from the Consciousness that we are.

Trying to find our way Home within the dream only maintains the dream further.

Isn’t that right, Claire?

Klare?

Clare…?

[Excerpt from HOME]

An ape remembers a tool they need to retrieve an inaccessible reward and heads off in search of it.

A cave man sketches a hunt scene on the stone wall, allowing for the transportation of his learning to another, long after the hunt itself is over.

A scientist designs a rocket that will reach a planet no one has never visited.

Even the amoeba, a single-celled organism, stores memory in protein structures.

All of this made possible by Intelligence in form.

In this section we are looking at the infinite organising Intelligence of life.

There are trillions of cells in the human body and, within each, a nucleus is sending directions to the cell to grow, mature, divide, or die. This Intelligence in action at a microscopic cellular level becomes more complex and organised as the cells form tissue, organs, organ systems and eventually the human organism.

What is this Intelligence? It is a dynamic, coordinated, organising force. It is not be confused with the intellect which is the faculty of reasoning and understanding. The faculty of the intellect depends wholly on the Intelligence of life to exist. Without the fundamental Intelligence, seamlessly and continually integrating, responding, calibrating, balancing… nothing.

And without form, the organising power of life cannot appear. Information is Intelligence in form. The forms might appear to be separate - apes, cavemen, scientists, amoebas - but the organising Intelligence of which they are made is indivisible.

The more evolved and complex the organism, the greater the ability to take information and move conceptually, intellectually and experientially beyond immediate reality as it is right now.

As far as we know, humans are the only species able to explore and conceptualise the Intelligence that brings them into existence.

And modern humans are, of course, extremely able in this regard. (It is simultaneously our greatest advantage and our greatest disadvantage.)

Let’s look closely at what is going on.

The brain, perception, emotion and behaviour combination is a dynamic learning system, created, maintained and animated by life Intelligence.

It continually responds to stimuli and environmental changes in order to maintain the survival of the organism.

Learning is ‘packaged’ up as a concept or as a representation, applied in other situations, shared or future-cast.

This is an enormous advantage. In the child, learning is taking place that the cup, once dropped, will always fall downwards and that learning is applied to other objects, other situations, other times.

We say ‘the child is learning how cups fall’. Or ‘I am learning to drive’ or ‘I am learning French’ but that process of learning - how words, actions and phenomena are actually converted into rules, responses and expectations - is not governed by the conscious mind. The ‘I’ I believe I am has nothing to do with how learning actually happens.

This packaging of learning is efficient and practical. Depending on how complex the organism, the greater the wealth of information that can be managed.

Because mental phenomena create a limitless world of infinite potential, they allow for language and communication, planning and references to events that happened a second or millennia ago, future projections, scientific discoveries, art and literature, buildings and creations…

Where human problems begin is when these packaged up concepts become embedded as beliefs and unquestioned ways of perceiving and responding that are dysfunctional and tenacious.

Instead of (as happens in the amoeba) a construct dissolving in the face of new information, it now has a longevity to it. It becomes the lens through which reality is viewed. This distorting lens filters out anything that doesn’t support the belief and focuses in on anything that provides more evidence for it.

The distortion confirms, maintains and intensifies itself.

So the once-upon-a-time learned version of self, other and reality becomes the all-the-time version.

That same child-brain creating unconscious mental rules about gravity and objects, might also be forming the concept that the child has to cry to get food or be invisible to avoid abuse or be charming to get attention. Or anything else. And these beliefs will remain, dynamically creating experience, until they no longer look true.

The reality we experience therefore is not reality. It is the experience of the embedded and embodied mental phenomena. Our lives are the on-going continuation of what was once learned. Often to the extent of serious harm to self and other.

Mental phenomena, conscious and unconscious, when misunderstood, trap lived experience in a learned version of reality which, at best, is a waste of time, energy and resources and at worst risks the very survival of the individual itself, other people and their environment.

The amoeba does not have this problem. Its primitive protein memory structures dissolve and reform rapidly in response to environmental changes. The simplicity of its structure, its continual ‘now-ness’ mean that its reactions and behaviours are never stuck in a created version of itself and reality.

The human, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish (so to speak). We can have all sorts of behavioural tendencies, emotional patterns or prolonged mental states that originated in response to a past reality but which are to the detriment of the life we are living now.

It might be habits around food, health, money, sex, socialising, gambling, drugs. It might be feelings of depression, anxiety, insecurity, fear, shame, jealousy… It might be tendencies towards conflict, numbing, distraction, comparison, withdrawal…

We try to change these, in other words we try to un-learn an old way of being or re-learn a new way. And, more often than not, we fail. We remain stuck in these patterns, habits and addictions. Why is that? Why can we not, like the amoeba, instantly dissolve and recreate our mental, physical and behavioural phenomena?

Because there has been no change in the apparent reality.

No aspect of reality is objectively true in the way it appears to be, but the self concept, entirely made of thought and belief, is less true than anything else. Unlike the cup or the child’s body it has no apparent form. Unlike gravity it has no consistency or applicability.

The unquestioned self concept is the original distorting lens. The self’s attempt to try to change itself and the world is conditioning trying to change conditioning, a belief trying to change a belief, the unreal trying to change the unreal.

It can probably go without saying that we cannot un-learn or re-learn anything in relation to ourselves while the concept of ourself is taken as fixed reality.

Change happens from the understanding that mental phenomena – conscious or unconscious – are constructions not reality. And that the self construct is the least real of all.

The amoeba, even though it has the presence and purity of response that even the most non-dual of gurus can only hope for, is, of course, not the aim for us.

That would be regression. It makes no sense, even if it were possible, to dissolve our remarkable human mental capacities.

The pinnacle is (as pointed out by Maslow, in a later edition to his triangle): self transcendence.

The movement through and beyond the unreal, but tenaciously believable, concept of a defined, separate, objective, individual self.

The freedom of living, with all the advantages of the super-powered human mind understood for what they are.

The unlimited potential of being infinite and absolute life Intelligence in human form.

[Excerpt from GAME]

Remember Rule 3?

The Game is dual. Everything in it exists because the opposite also exists.

It is impossible to have happiness without sadness.

Just as it is impossible to have cold without hot or up without down.

The character arose from… there isn’t a word for it… the ecstasy of life…? pure bliss…? absolute joy…?

What is it that gave rise to the Northern Lights or the inside of a rose or the smile of a baby or the Grand Canyon or the morning dew?

There is no word that can come close to that magnificent, quietly exuberant everything-ness.

But the character is searching for it. Looking for what it arose from.

The closest the character - a dual being in a dual world - can come to it is pleasure.

Which can only exist with pain.

Or contentment.

Which can only exist with discontent.

Or happiness.

Which can only exist with sadness.

Or delight.

Which can only exist with despair.

It cannot have only one. If it wants one, it has to also have the other. This is intolerable to the character who wants only the absolute.

But the absolute is hidden by The Game.

And so the search continues.

[Excerpt from WELL]

‘Make the suffering stop. It is overwhelming. Take away the anguish. Make me feel better. I’ve tried everything. This is my last hope.’

Maybe we all know that desperation. It might not be suffering in relation to health. It might be about our partner or money or family or career or anything.

But the plea is the same ‘make the suffering stop’. And we try everything to get rid of it. All the time trying to get rid of the sensation of dis-ease, discomfort, insecurity, desperation through whatever means available. And all the focus and effort is on the pushing away and numbing, on the resisting and squashing. There is no enquiry into what is actually causing the suffering. And I don’t mean what is causing the pain or the illness I mean what is causing the resistance to whatever is, the idea that what is should be different.

None of the attention is on what is actually true. The cacophony of thoughts about the future, the past, the comparisons with others, the identity that springs from the suffering goes unquestioned. There is pushing away of whatever is being experienced and there is complete belief in whatever is being thought. And that is the way of it. That is the conditioned sleepwalking that we are all doing until a kiss from a prince (or perhaps a book… if indeed books can kiss… I’m sure they can… ) breaks the trance and wakes us up.

And the waking state is reality. It is sanity and truthfulness and just what is. The waking is the opposite of the sleepwalking. In sleepwalking, we resist experience, we resist the sensations of the body and live the unquestioned reality of thought and belief. The waking state turns that upside down. The body, that fluid living intelligence, is honoured, noticed, attended to.

The narrative story is understood for what it is - the workings of a frantic mind. The waking is simply presence to all of this. The waking is the realisation that no thought or belief or concept, including that epicentre of the whole caboodle - the concept of self, is true. There is no peace or freedom for the thought-created self no matter how hard it tries to control itself and the world around it. The peace and freedom are there already. It’s just that all that searching for them is obscuring them.

The revelation of that peace and freedom is what we had been looking for all along. And the search had made us iller, more burdened and more exhausted. Now there is the falling away of what we are not. The ending of the search for the unobtainable. The simple sanity of living as the pure source intelligence that we are.

In every sense… well.
